The preschool curriculum at Jack & Jill emerges from the principles of developmentally appropriate practice in which children learn as they interact with each other, adults and the environment. We follow the preschool learning sequence of the Core Knowledge® Foundation which moves from the child's current abilities toward developing skills and ways of thinking that will lay the base for future learning. We also incorporate principals from Color Me Healthy and Handwriting Without Tears®. Interactions with other children and adults give us an opportunity to guide social development and conflict resolution.

Two year olds:
  1. learn about themselves
  2. learn about their feelings
  3. learn about others
  4. learn about communicating
  5. learn about moving and doing
  6. acquire thinking skills

This class for two year olds meets changing needs by providing a safe, appropriate, challenging and stimulating environment. Children develop independence as they explore; they develop large and small motor skills and self-help skills. As their language skills increase, they interact with others and grow socially.

3-5 year olds:
Preschoolers learn
  1. to experience a sense of self-esteem
  2. to exhibit a positive attitude toward life
  3. to demonstrate cooperative behavior
  4. to acquire learning and problem solving skills
  5. to expand logical thinking skills
  6. to acquire a fuller understanding of their world
  7. to demonstrate skills in make-believe play
  8. to expand verbal communications skills
  9. to develop beginning reading skills
  10. to acquire beginning writing skills
  11. to enhance and refine fine motor skills
  12. to use all senses in learning

This preschool group is involved in active learning through discovery and hands-on activities. All play centers involve literacy experiences and encourage language development. Pre-math skills, art and creativity are integrated into many centers and group times. Social play and interactions help children learn cooperation, kindness and self control.

Jack & Jill Before School/After School Program provides families with safe, reliable, affordable child care in an educational/recreational setting. Our program provides families with a safe and nurturing place for their children to be actively engaged in enriching activities before and after school hours.

Jack & Jill also offers Intersession Programming concurrent with the public/private elementary school schedules. Students participate in enjoyable, productive and educational games and activities. Plus, they receive help with homework and socially interact with other children.

Special Events and Celebrations

  • You will be notified about celebrations (Valentines Day, Thanksgiving, etc.) which involve the whole Center. These are excellent opportunities for the children to gather as a whole community.
  • If you wish to celebrate a special day in your child’s life (birthday, etc.), please discuss your plans with the teacher/Director. We ask that these individual celebrations take place during the morning or afternoon snack time. Please bring cupcakes or cookies rather than a whole cake. Remember, we can celebrate without too many sugary foods!! Please keep in mind that small toys and some foods pose a choking hazard.
  • We are a peanut/nut free Center. We cannot allow any kind of nut or nut butter because of the potential for allergy.
  • Each year Jack & Jill staff and students participate in the Warrenton Christmas Parade on the morning of the first Saturday in December. Please plan to be a part of this activity.
  • In early June each year we hold a Saturday morning celebration for the children who will be entering Kindergarten in the Fall. All families are welcome to join us.

Field Trips and Walks

  • Occasionally, classes may take neighborhood walks or field trips designed to fit into the curriculum. Children might walk to the church at the end of Green Street to observe seasonal changes in the garden, to the town library, post office or other nearby buildings. Such trips are often spontaneous, so as part of the parental agreements, you are asked to sign a blanket permission slip for such trips. If possible, you will be informed that your child’s class will take a walk the day before it takes place. Emergency numbers, class lists and first aid supplies will accompany the children. Cell phones will provide communication with the Center.
  • Few field trips are taken in vehicles. No child may participate in any field trip involving a vehicle without written permission from the parent. Strict safety procedures will be followed. All children will be belted when the vehicle is moving. Doors and windows will be closed and locked. Drivers will be given emergency telephone numbers, directions and/or maps, and a list of the children in the vehicle.
